In early November, Daman Products welcomed Schmucker Middle School from Penn-Harris-Madison School Corp. to their ninth annual Fluid Power Action Challenge. Schmucker along with 29+ teams from eight other area schools (Clay Intermediate, Edison Intermediate, Jackson Intermediate, LaSalle Academy, Navarre Intermediate, John Young Middle, Jimtown Middle and Career Academy of South Bend) spent two action-packed days at Daman headquarters in Mishawaka preparing for Challenge Day on January 18th. After learning about fluid power, the seventh and eighth-grade students will spend time over the next eight weeks engineering their prototypes.
Challenge Day is a timed event where the teams have to re-build their working hydraulic or pneumatic machine using just wood, paper, tubing, syringes, and glue. The machine must be able to pick up objects and move them, one at a time, to various targets on a board. It might sound easy, but each board has varying heights and obstacles that the teams need to overcome.
